Constructing Princess Leia’s Hoth Costume
I am making the white jumpsuit and off-white vest, Princess Leia worn on Hoth, for a customer. It turned out to be pretty challenging. I started with the vest. I used the Rebel Legion guidelines and a tutorial that was linked to the RL costume guide.
Once the individual pieces were cut of fabric, two sets, one for the outer shell and one for the lining, I cut the batting used to give the vest its quilted look. The quilting only goes up to the yoke, so the batting was cut to match the bottom portion of the vest. Using a ruler and a black marker, I drew the quilting lines on the batting. The pattern is diamond shaped and I made them 4 inches square. From past experience on other quilted items, I find it easier to quilt from the batting side.
This is the front side and the batting side after the quilting was done. I used pins to keep the batting in place during the quilting process.
Once the outside of the vest was quilted, I added the faux pocket flaps and the chest ID pocket on the upper left side of the vest.
Next I had to add the batting to the yoke sections so the thickness of the vest would be consistent on the top and the bottom.
I cut this all in one piece to prevent it from slipping out of place at the shoulders.
The collar was a bit tricky because it need to have piping around the edge and it had a bit more padding than the rest of the vest. I used three layers of batting in the collar to give it a fuller look. The collar pieces were sewn to the outside of the vest and to the lining. Then I added the piping as I was sewing the pieces together. The vest also has piping at the yoke line, per Rebel Legion standards.
The lining was sewn to the outer vest along the bottom, the front opening, the collar, and the arm holes. The sides were left open to allow for turning the vest right side out. The sides are then sewn together and the whole vest is top-stitched. The final result is an off-white vest that very closely resembles the one Princess Leia wore.
